Artist Statement

The natural world provides me with my main source of inspiration. Initially drawing directly from nature allows me the freedom to explore my technique, heighten my observational skills and be more aware of nature and the ever changing elements. These preliminary drawings, sometimes large in scale can be finished works in themselves, they are then developed into even larger scale works in the studio. I strive to achieve dynamic compositions in my work which can seem fairly instinctive/intuitive in practice, sometimes this means drawing with the paper/support on the floor/ground or from other unusual vantage points.

I currently prefer to work using pastel and conté pencil on paper as this medium enables me to react spontaneously and swiftly to the often fleeting and transient subject matter that confronts me.

I am particularly drawn to forms that have a 'sculptural quality' and I try to focus on their subtleties and distinct characteristics to create something which encapsulates my initial urge to draw. The two main themes which I am pursuing at the moment and which comprise these 'sculptural qualities' are 'animals' and 'trees'.
